Why You Shouldn’t Use a Bike Cover with a Bike Rack
One question we get almost daily is: Can I use a bike cover with my rack? After all, covering your bike seems like a logical way to shield it from rain, dirt, and road debris. However, using a bike cover while your bike is mounted on a rack can actually cause more harm than good. Here’s why we at Hollywood Racks say you should not use a bike cover when transporting bikes on a rack:
1. Increased Wind Resistance and Drag
A bike cover turns your carefully secured bike into an unintended sail. At highway speeds, wind can get trapped inside the cover, creating excessive drag and turbulence. This puts strain on your bike rack, the mounting points, and even your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In extreme cases, the added wind resistance can cause the bike to shift, loosen, or even come off the rack completely.
2. Risk of Damage to the Bike and Cover
While a cover might seem like it would protect your bike, it can actually do the opposite. Wind causes the cover to flap and rub against the bike at high speeds, potentially leading to scratches, scuff marks, or even damage to the bike’s paint and components. Over time, the friction from constant movement can wear down both the cover and your bike’s frame.
3. Obstructed Visibility and Safety Hazards
A bike cover can obscure reflectors, taillights, and license plates, making it more difficult for other drivers to see your vehicle clearly.
4. Moisture and Dirt Trapping
Instead of keeping your bike clean, a cover can actually trap moisture and dirt inside. If it’s raining or humid, condensation can build up under the cover, leading to rust and corrosion—especially on chains, gears, and other metal parts. Road grime and dust can also accumulate beneath the cover, potentially making your bike dirtier than if it were left uncovered.
In summary, while a bike cover is great for stationary storage, it’s not suited for use with a bike rack. The risks of wind damage, safety hazards, and trapped moisture outweigh any potential benefits. Instead, focus on securing and maintaining your bike properly for transport. Your bike—and your car—will thank you.
