Welcome! This webpage is a resource for businesses interested in participating in the LADOT Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) Program. Here you will find all the information you need to become a partner with the BFB Program and learn about the benefits of promoting bicycling in your community.
Candidates for the BFB Program include local retailers, restaurants, and other businesses committed to supporting and encouraging bicyclists in Los Angeles by providing Bicycle Friendly amenities and programs. Any establishment located within the City of Los Angeles can join the program by fulfilling Bicycle Friendly criteria like installing bicycle facilities for patrons, offering business promotions for people travelling by bicycle, encouraging bicycle commuting for employees, or sponsoring bicycle friendly community events.
Bicycles Mean Business
Creating safe and attractive streets
- Streets that prioritize bicycling, walking, and public transit experience increases in economic, social, and cultural vitality
- Bicycle infrastructure creates a buffer for people on the sidewalk, making streets and storefronts safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians
- Bicycle infrastructure can reduce roadway travel speeds and help to make streets safer for all users
Increasing business visibility and access
- Bicycling facilities (e.g. bike lanes and bicycle corrals) increase bicycle and foot traffic
- A one-car parking space can be converted into 14 or more parking spaces for people on bikes
- People on bikes are more likely to stop and shop – they don’t have to look for parking and can stay as long as they like since bicycle parking has no time limit
Increasing retail sales
- People on bikes have worked up an appetite- bikes are great for food and drink sales
- With money saved on travel costs, people on bikes often have more money to spend at local businesses
- Armed with a basket or pannier, people on bikes are excellent consumers: studies in NYC, Toronto, and Portland found that people who biked and walked to commercial areas came more often and spent more money per month than those who drove
- In Seattle and NYC, taxable retail sales data showed that bike lanes had a positive economic impact
- In a local study of York Bl, the bike lane-related road diet showed zero negative effect on local business sales
A Public-Private Partnership for Better Communities
The BFB Program is an initiative of the LADOT Bicycle Program’s Bicycle Outreach and Planning Group. The program is a partnership between the City of Los Angeles, neighborhood and business organizations, and local businesses committed to encourage short trips for local dining and shopping and support bicycling as an active mode of transportation.
Outreach and Support for Businesses
The BFB Program provides support for local businesses who cater, or wish to cater, to people traveling by bike or foot. The goal of the program is to make bicycling a viable option for those who are visiting your community to shop, dine, work, and play!
Aside from providing businesses with resources to make themselves Bicycle Friendly, the program also serves as a directory for people travelling by bicycle in Los Angeles. Businesses participating in the BFB Program will be listed here, allowing bicyclists to discover businesses offering deals and amenities for people on bikes. Participating businesses are placed on a listing and map of Bicycle Friendly businesses.
